Located in sunny Oakland, 20 minutes from downtown San Francisco, the Museum presents state-of-the-art exhibitions and educational programs to a multicultural audience. Housed in an innovative, three-tiered complex of galleries and gardens, the Museum’s vast collections, special exhibitions, and educational outreach programs attract visitors from around the world. Highlights of the collections include paintings from the Bay Area Figurative School, an interpreted “Walk Across California,” and significant artifacts from the California Gold Rush. Hours: Wednesday–Saturday, 10:00 am–5:00 pm Closed: Mondays, Tuesdays, New Year’s Day, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Directions: BART to Lake Merritt station. Exit at 9th Street and walk down 9th, with the one-way flow of traffic, one block to Fallon. Turn left and walk one block to 10th St. Museum will be right in front of you. By car: Cross the Bay Bridge following signs to 580 East. (Do not take the new 880 Cypress freeway exit.) Take 980 West to downtown Oakland, exit at the Jackson Street ramp, and proceed straight on the exit road.
